Personal Statement

I am 28 years old, married with a young son and have lived in Kent all my life, bar 3 years at University in Nottingham. I love my sport and keeping fit. I'm enthusiastic and energetic in all things that I do and carry this through into my tutoring. Tutoring is a second profession for me, my primary being a Police officer. The experience I have gained through the police has enabled me to connect to people from all backgrounds and in very differing circumstances. Although I believe I have always managed to communicate well with others, this is a skill that becomes honed as a police officer and so this is strong point of my tutoring.

Teaching Experience

I have been tutoring for a few years now, having started as a favour to a few of my younger brothers friends whilst I was still at University. More recently I have found myself focussing on those with learning difficulties, ranging from autism and asperges to numerical dyslexia. I have experience in my personal life of being around people with learning difficulties and that paired with the invaluable experience I have gained through my primary profession as a police officer means that I am not fazed where others might be and I am able to find a way of getting through to them. The last academic year had probably been the most enjoyable, purely because every single student I had the pleasure of tutoring, surpassed their expectations regarding grades and results of exams and coursework. Some got into sixth form or college on the back of their results and those that were taking their A-Levels were able to take up a place at their preferred university. I never guarantee I will get students the grades they want, however, I do promise I will try my very hardest to help them enjoy their education and to fulfil their own potential. I am now part of the learning and development team within Kent police, which means I train student officers in a teaching environment.

Teaching approach

I am very relaxed and informal with my students. I prefer they learn things about me as well as letting them tell me of their own lives and what interests them. I find this brings about a bond between tutor and student and allows the sessions to be far more enjoyable. What I find is that if a student is enjoying the time spent studying, then they are more likely to absorb the content of the subject, and thus preparing themselves better for future exams. Enjoyment of studying is what I strive to achieve, with results obviously being the main driving force. I believe I have been successful in this thus far.
