Personal Statement

I am an enthusiastic, hardworking and outgoing person who is committed to and passionate about the teaching profession. I have achieved a 2.1 Honours Bachelor of Education le Gaeilge from Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick, I am fully registered with the Teaching Council and I completed a Master of Education in 2015. I have been awarded a Certificate in Special Educational Needs, a Preparatory Certificate in English Language Teaching, a Certificate in Religious Education, and have completed a variety of CPD courses.

Teaching Experience

I have three years teaching experience. I have taught mainly 8 to 10 year olds however I have also engaged in tutoring students in secondary school up to the age of 16. As part of the probationary process, I collaborated and consulted with resource and learning support teachers and parents in the writing of Individual Education Profiles. This past year, I have been fortunate to learn from and work with students with specific learning difficulties and conditions such as dyslexia, Speech and Language Disorders and Cerebral Palsy. I have engaged students in the use of Numicon, Readers’ Theatre, Buddy Reading, literacy stations/workshops, which involved team teaching, and parallel teaching in the area of numeracy. I have experience of integrating, differentiating and assessing literacy across the curriculum, including effective planning and linkage of Oral and Writing genres. I am familiar with the main elements of the Building Bridges programme and have engaged students in the effective use of different comprehension strategies before, during and after reading. I am committed to active learning across the curriculum particularly in the implementation of the Maths Curriculum and SESE. I have planned for the use of technology across the curriculum, including the use of interactive white boards and iPads. I have also engaged students in the use of webquests which facilitate enquiry-oriented learning. Throughout my studies at MIC, subsequent Teaching Placements, work experience and other work involving children I have become familiarised with and implemented a range of pedagogical strategies and approaches to cater for a variety of different learning needs and abilities. I am familiar with the Aistear Programme and have engaged students in active, child-centred learning. This involves planning structured and unstructured play through which students can learn and develop socially, emotionally and physically

Teaching approach

I am a kind patient teacher. Inspectors’ reports have described lesson content as appropriately matched to children’s ability and engaging. I have been described as creative, positive and as having clear expressive communication skills and a natural teaching ability. I am committed to active learning across the curriculum particularly in the implementation of the Maths, English and Science Curriculum. I ensure that students are working at their own level to ensure they are being challenged adequately.
