Personal Statement

My name is Sivanjaa Thanigasalam and I hold a 1st class honours degree in Biomedical Science and a Merit in my Masters in Neuroscience from King's College London. I am currently doing my PhD in Neuropharmacology. My ultimate aim is to enter academia as a lecturer whilst being actively involved in research in inflammatory disorders. I enjoy working with children in learning environments hence my interest in tutoring children at different levels. I have previously volunteered in pre-school environments and tutored children ranging from primary school up till university standards.

Teaching Experience

I have been tutoring children aged 5-21 in the subject areas: Biology, Maths and English for more than 6 years. These include key exams such as Key stage 1, 2, GCSEs and A levels with some tutoring sessions organised for Biomedical Science at Bachelors degree level. Having worked in pre-school settings, I have had the opportunity with working with children that have learning difficulties, language barriers and those that are above average standards. I am able to adapt to each children's ability and work with them to push them to high standards.

Teaching approach

I work with my tutee throughout the full session ensuring they fully understand what I am explaining. I am able to adapt to the child's individual needs and learning style. I produce exercises, with question and answer sessions wherever possible. Furthermore, I prepare homework and work for the session beforehand so as to avoid wasting time. I am happy to go over school homework or any other questions the student may have. I do not finish my tutoring session as soon as the time is done; I make sure my tutee has fully grasped what was taught in the lesson and the work in complete. Teaching exercises include: > Oral explanations > Creative drawings were applicable > Exercise questions from books/website > Multiple choice/essay questions > Past papers > Exam tips and how to remember information > Homework
