Top Tips for Tutors

Before a lesson

  • It is always important to introduce yourself and know more about your pupil's requirements.

  •  It is important to be organised as this will show your professionalism and help pupils become organised in their learning too.

  • For some pupils this may be their first experience of one-to-one tuition, so ensure that a clear guidance of how the lessons will be conducted is given, and reassure them about the overall process.

  • English may not be the first language for some people. If this is the case, consider speaking in a slower manner making sure they fully understand each step of the way.

  • Consider what type of pupil you will work with. Younger pupils may find it more difficult expressing their difficulties than older pupils.

  • Make sure you have a full understanding of the examination criteria or curriculum they are studying, and be prepared to tackle any questions they may ask you.

  • If necessary bring along resources and materials, or have a look at the material they provide you with to get a clear picture of how you can help them.

  • Before you start the lesson or each activity, you should give an outline of the intended learning outcomes. Also, highlighting what Health Care Tips activities you will be engaging in. This gives the pupil clarity of the lesson and will allow for open discussion with the pupil.

During the lesson

  • Always listen to the pupil and try to get them to express themselves about their difficulties. Ascertain how much they currently understand. This will prompt the pupil to open up and discuss these issues.

  • It is important that a pupil does not feel intimidated by yourself, and that they can express themselves confidently. Try and encourage this throughout the lesson.

  • Remember that every individual processes information differently, so it is very important that you establish the best learning style for each pupil.

  • Encourage pupils to contribute to the lessons; they are more likely to contribute when they are aware that their participation is vitally important.

  • Encourage pupils to think for themselves, rather than just giving them the answer. It is important that they understand the concept leading to the answer.

  • The pupil should be setting targets to work towards, which are realistic and practical.

  • Giving the pupil feedback during the lessons will encourage and inspire them.

  • It is important that the pupil remains engaged and focused in the learning, for this reason try and break up the sessions.

  • Give praises when they are due. Like everyone, we like to know when we have done well. This encourages the pupil to work harder and shows them they are succeeding.

  • Ensure that the lesson comes to an end in a well-structured manner, and that the intended learning outcomes have been met or where you will be picking up next time.

After the lesson

  • It is important that you evaluate what your pupil has learnt. Make sure that the pupil clearly understands what it is you have gone through by the end of the lesson.

  • Make sure that any further activities or tasks are fully explained, and answer any questions or concerns your pupil may have.

  • Finding out how your pupil found the lesson is very important to assess further ways to help them, and also to help you.

  • If you need to consider sourcing any further materials that would help them further, discuss this with the pupil or parent.

  • Give the parent a clear picture of how their child is progressing. It is important for every parent to make sure their child is benefiting from the lessons, and discuss any issues that may need addressing.
